Gifts That Give Back

OK, now that Thanksgiving is over, I’m ready to stop thinking about food (at least for a little while) and start thinking about gifts. I always put off getting presents until the last minute, but this year I’m going to start early! (Does November 30th still count as early??)

And since I’m a part of the Arbor Lineage, I want my presents to help the green world…or at least not harm it!! So I’m going to give to green charities and make my own gifts this year.

I looked online for a long time and found some charities I think are really cool. They’re also places where even a small donation like mine can help a lot. Here’s my list:

Plant a Tree
iPhorest is a cool iPhone app that lets you digitally plant and water a tree and then watch it grow. For each virtual tree planted, The Conservation Fund plants a native tree in real life – starting with restoration of vulnerable wildlife habitats along the Gulf Coast in the United States.

Adopt an Acre
Think big! Adopt a whole acre in a part of the world you really care about. I would probably pick the Appalachians (which includes New York) or Las Californias. What would you pick?

Feed America
Give a holiday hope card to honor someone special and help feed the hungry at the same time. Feeding America can turn one dollar into nine pounds of food.

Give a Goat
Help end hunger around the world by giving families the gift of trees, baby chicks, or even llamas! Families use these gifts to raise their own food and become self-reliant. They also give the babies away to neighbors to help support everyone in the community. And the farming methods they teach are good to the animals and to the planet.

Adopt a Snow Leopard
This one’s for Kerka! Kerka really, really loves snow leopards (when her book comes out, you’ll find out why!) They’re endangered and they need our help . Besides, have you ever looked at a snow leopard cub???? Cuteness meter off the scale.

Next I’m going to come up with a bunch of DIY present ideas — if you have any cool ones, email me!
