Comparing People to Plants

In my interview with Maria Hinojosa of NPR’s Latino USA, I was asked how nature influenced my work in the Fairy Godmother Academy stories. My lifelong love of trees, rocks, water, flowers, and birds comes out all over this book series.

In Book 1, Birdie’s Book, Birdie comes to New York City from her beloved green Califa ( her name for California) and longs for a place where she can grow things. When she travels to upstate New York to visit her long lost maternal grandmother, she finds her grandmother, Mo, to be an avid plant lover with a grand garden and greenhouse. It was a labor of love to describe the perfect garden and then go on to describe it in winter. I used my mind’s eye to see in winter what the spring would, not doubt, bring to life.

Using botanical names for people is Birdie’s little game in the story. I think it’s fun to actually compare people to plants. Alongside all the real plant and nature is the fantasy natural world where all the colors are even more vivid than real life and of course gravity is not a problem. I relied on feelings and memories to describe things here.

All of this leads to another form of expression- fashion! Check out this image of Birdie in her special nature- based Fall ensemble!

Gifts That Give Back

OK, now that Thanksgiving is over, I’m ready to stop thinking about food (at least for a little while) and start thinking about gifts. I always put off getting presents until the last minute, but this year I’m going to start early! (Does November 30th still count as early??)

And since I’m a part of the Arbor Lineage, I want my presents to help the green world…or at least not harm it!! So I’m going to give to green charities and make my own gifts this year. Continue reading

Good Food, NYC style!

Last month the Food Bank For New York City came to talk to us at school. We were all really surprised when they told us that almost half the people in the city need help getting enough food. And that 1 in 5 kids get their meals from soup kitchens and food pantries! The good news is they have a bunch of cool programs to help—soup kitchens, food pantries, sending backpacks of food home with kids, taking food to the elderly, helping runaways—they do a lot.

We decided we wanted to help too, so we started a food drive at school, and all of the classrooms competed to see who could collect the most cans. Our Green Squad even donated right from our school garden: lettuces, cabbage, spinach, beets and peas. It made me really happy to think of people eating homegrown food that we had raised just for them. I can’t wait to tell Granny Mo! Continue reading

Help Me Save the Green World!

Join with friends to make your own Fairy Godmother Local Lineage and act together to save the planet. Then send me a message to let me know what you’re up to. I’ll feature the most active Lineages here on my blog!

Your first act is to form a Green Squad just like the one I joined at the International School. Then go for it and start protecting the green world right away.

Best of luck! I can’t wait to hear all about it.

What A Best Friend Knows Sing-Along

This song makes me think of my friend Kerka. Of course we’re friends at school, but if you’ve read my book then you know we’ve been on BIG adventures together. We couldn’t be more different, but I think that’s what makes us such a good team. When we were travelling together, I’d be noticing the leaves on a tree, and then realize Kerka was already halfway through climbing it! We’ve laughed and cried together and even gotten in a few fights, but put us together and there’s no challenge we can’t beat. Continue reading
